You will find some of the most beautifully drawn maps in China, I have some for Yangshuo, Huangshan and even Beihai Park in Beijing, but the most important thing to remember about artistic maps is this - NOT TO SCALE.  This is fairly important when you are cycling around Yangshuo, it is vital when you are walking around the top of the mountain.

I would advise you to get a very good map of Huangshan, but I am not sure that one exists.  Everyone I met on the mountain had a different map, and they really weren’t much use even put together, because they were all two dimensional, and you really need a three dimensional map to try and understand the top of this mountain.  Perhaps the only thing I can really recommend is that you get every map going and try and use them together...? 

The best maps that I had on the trip were those in the DK Eyewitness guide books, and also the maps given out by hotels in the cities, which will either already have the hotel marked on them, or the hotel will be happy to mark their location on.

Don’t leave your hotel without one, or at the very least a few of the hotel’s business cards with their address and directions on it in Chinese.

And be prepared for slightly different types of road markings to follow.  My wonderful walking guide in Yangshuo had four types of path marked - dirt track, large footpath, small footpath and... um... indistinct path... it’s a wonder I got to Moon Hill at all!  But it was fun, and actually a lot easier than cycling to the Dragonback Bridge.
