You can always get a taxi from the train station to the hotel, but this is one occasion where we had the time and the inclination to try the bus.

For €1.95 a ticket we took the long way round - and with air conditioning, vast picture windows and a meandering drive around the hills, it was the cheapest tour bus I’ve ever been on.

It was a little confusing - which is where it was great to have an Italian speaking friend - but essentially you buy the tickets from the cigarette shop in the station, then hang around outside until the right bus comes along.  As you only really need to know the name of the destination you can get by okay if you don’t mind looking a little bit lost.

(Always a good idea to have your hotel reception phone number on speed dial, as well as the address.)

It’s very easy to spot the spa and the hotel is only a few hundred yards away. To come back the bus stop is just a hundred yards up the road on the same side as the hotel - it’s hard to see how it could be easier.

But do leave yourself plenty of time, remember this is Italy.  (If you arrive early back at the station there is a great ice cream shop to keep you busy until it’s time to leave.)

€1.95 each way for the bus ticket, the journey was 25 minutes (the bus also goes on to Montepulciano):
