Situated just off the Piazza Italia this was a great stop for us as we could hardly be bothered to walk after our relaxing spa.  It has an incredible menu with many, many, many tasting options.  I so desperately wanted to try the dessert tasting menu, but I really, really couldn’t manage it.

We had a taster platter to start, with all kinds of local ham, which actually arrived after a complimentary platter of “amuse bouche”.  (I was very amused.)

Then I went for the salt cod which was wonderful.  Sadly Orla’s steak and our vegetables (well we had just spent the day in the spa) were a little on the cold side - but excellent.

I was also really taken with the salt selection - I have never been offered different types of salt before!

It would have been rude not to try the local wine, so we had a lovely Montepulciano, as well as sparkling water to stay hydrated.

The menu is handily in English as well as Italian and the waiters did a great job with their language skills.  Altogether it was a great dinner, although we were falling asleep at the table after our day at the spa (and I made up for my lack of dessert in style the next day).

The best food and drink tips in this area are just to eat as much as possible - try anything you haven’t seen before on a menu and, of course, enjoy all that beautiful local wine.

But I will give you a fantastic tip for eating at Fiumicino Airport.  First of all don’t rush through to international departures - that’s where they keep the food for tourists.  Instead, hang back and wander around the main body of the airport after you’ve been through security.  This is where you’ll find a lot of shops and restaurants aimed at domestic Italian travellers.  And the stand out is Antica Focacceria San Francesco which is a Sicilian street food “stand” where you can buy as much or as little as you like, and then just sit on a stool and enjoy your delicacies.  Definitely try the spinach arancina - (rice, cheese and spinach fried together) just delectable.
