A day spa usually refers to a spa that is not attached to a hotel – hence it's just for the day. Having said that many hotel spas operate as day spas and non-guests can also book in to use the facilities. Some hotels even refer to their spas as day spas. Many famous day spas also have accommodation attached, (Blue Lagoon in Iceland has a popular and very famous day spa and a nearby clinic with accommodation, dining and courses of treatment available) or can recommend suitable accommodation nearby if you want to make a spa break of it.
(It's no wonder people get confused!)
