In the UK Thermal Spa and Thermal Spa Experiences are used to describe spas with hot and cold facilities like Steam Rooms and Ice Plunge Pools that allow you to raise and cool your temperature, hence thermal.
However it is confusing because the original Latin used by the Romans for spa or baths, thermae also means springs, or hot springs. In Italy terme describes the hot springs from which spa waters issue, as well as the spa using the mineral waters. Spa towns are justly famous for their waters, not the latest microdermabrasion techniques.
Mind you is it any more confusing than "spa" being used for many places that don't even boast a shower, when the original meaning of spa is "health through waters"?
